Kenny Edkin Scores Bud Bricker Nationals Victory for 1st Win Since June 2021

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Kenny Edkin has been a consistent winner at BAPS Motor Speedway for a solid four or five-year stretch in the Super Sportsman division.

That changed a bit in the last year. Edkin’s last victory at the York Haven, Pa., facility came on June 26th of the 2021 season. Since then, other competitors have stepped up, and Edkin’s had some mechanical issues along the way.

There has been more speed this season. Still, Edkin hasn’t been able to crack Victory Lane despite a series of top-three finishes.

Edkin erased all of his past setbacks during Saturday’s Bud Bricker Nationals presented by FK Rod Ends. The Marysville, Pa., driver slipped past Jay Fannasy and drove away to score his second straight win in the event and a $5,000 payday.

“After a while, you start to doubt yourself,” Edkin said. “We haven’t won since last year, and it’s kind of odd for us. We are usually pretty good at clicking them off, and we went on a run last year. We didn’t end the season the way we wanted to, and to start this season, you couldn’t get some parts.

“We have been struggling for four weeks or so, at least for us because we are used to winning races. We haven’t been out of the top three since opening night, but it’s hard. We are living in a wild time, and you can’t get what you used to buy, and you’ve got to kind of suffice.”

Continued Edkin, “I, finally, got to the point where I was like, ‘I’m not ready to go to the track if we aren’t going to have what we need to win.’ We pulled some strings, got what we needed, and here we are.”

Fannasy started on the pole and beat Tyler Wolford into the first corner. Before the lap could be scored, Allan Hallman and Eric Rutz crashed on the frontstretch.

The second attempt at a start was much like the first. Fannasy surged into the first corner on the top and pulled out to the lead. Edkin, who started fourth, settled into third before taking second from Wolford on Lap 3.

Edkin continued to chop into Fannasy’s lead. The job got a little easier on Lap 13, when Glenn Keller spun in the second corner.

Fannasy managed to keep the top spot on the restart. Edkins remained within striking distance and made the winning past on the 15th circuit with a slider through the first and second corner.

“Before we got the caution, I thought we were going to have a pretty good race,” Edkin said. “I was kind of biding my tires, because the track has been a little abrasive on tires this season. It’s been really racy, but we are going really fast and really using up tires.

“I was keeping that in the back of my mind and tried not to slide the tires, try not to spin them. You never know, and you can get a double-file restart with a lap to go, and you’ve got to have some tire left at the end of the race.”

Fannasy stayed close, but Edkin had the field covered. The multi-time BAPS Super Sportsman champion held on the rest of the way and took the checkered by 2.330 seconds over Fannasy and Scott Dellinger. Tony Jackson and Chase Gutshall completed the top five.

Edkin set quick time for the 25-car field with a lap of 17.766. Wolford, Edkin, and Matt Ondek were heat winners.

Tommy Slanker charged from 12th to the lead to take the checker in the 20-Lap Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event. Unfortunately for Slanker, he didn’t pass post-race inspection, and the win was handed to Wayne Pfeil.

Dan Zechman led the first eight laps of the main event. After a caution for Matt Murphy, Slanker, who was riding around the cushion in Turns 1 and 2 and used the middle at the other end of the speedway, slipped by on Lap 9.

Pfeil was methodical on his way to the front. He started fifth on the grid and charged into second on the 11th circuit. Slanker took the win by .467 seconds, but Pfeil was awarded the win after the tech process.

Chase Billet, Charles Potts, Joey Hoffer, and D.J. Mease completed the top five. Pfeil, Mease, and Zechman were heat winners for the 27-car field.

The most entertaining main event of the night came courtesy of the Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends presented by Baker Door Company. Jorjie Sweger won an entertaining battle with Travis McClelland and took the win by a mere .003 seconds at the stripe.

Sweger started 11th on the grid and took the lead on Lap 11 of 15. She led the final five circuits of her slugfest with McClelland to claim her fifth straight win at the speedway.

McClelland settled for second, with Bob Stough, Bill Diehl, and Austin Bellemare completing the top five. Mike Racine, McClelland, Sweger, and Shaun Abney were heat winners for the 36-car field.

In Street Stock action, Stan Wanner topped the 14-car field for the popular victory. He claimed the main event by 1.939 seconds after taking the lead from Chris Derr on the 17th circuit of the 25-Lap affair.

Ryan Bloom, Brian Rehbein, Jim Jacobs, and George Heller completed the top five. There were five cautions over the race distance.
