Tony Jackson Charges to Firecracker 40 Victory

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Tony Jackson was getting a little sick of his near misses and second-place finishes at BAPS Motor Speedway.

That’s been the result of his last three races at the York Haven, Pa., facility. The speed has been there, but it hasn’t been enough to punch his ticket to Victory Lane.

The string ended Saturday night. Jackson dominated the main event, lapping into the top 10 and capturing the prestigious Dellinger’s Auto Body Firecracker 40 by a hefty 6.03 seconds at the finish. He earned a $2,500 payday for his efforts.

“It finally feels good to win,” Jackson said. “I’m tired of running second. I want to thank Lori and Scott [Hess] for giving me this opportunity to drive this racecar. Scott drew the No. 2 tonight, and when you put this car on the front row, it’s going to be hard to beat as long as I drive it.

“We had a little bit of an issue with our motor, and I thought we were done. It started breaking up and breaking up, and I was actually waiting for Kenny [Edkin] or Russell [Mitten] to drive by me.”

Scott Dellinger started on the pole and beat Tony Jackson through the first and second corner to lead the first lap. It was an advantage that was short-lived, as Jackson wrestled the top spot away on Lap 2.

A trio of cautions in the first 10 laps slowed Jackson’s pace. The most notable came on Lap 10 when Dellinger stopped in the third corner.

As for the rest of the event, it belonged to Jackson. The Newville, Pa., driver could put his car anywhere on the speedway and was able to fight off the advances of third-place starter Kenny Edkin through the middle stages of the event.

“I was trying to catch guys when I could, and I saw Kenny’s nose one time,” Jackson said. “I bounced off the wall one time in one and two with the right rear pretty hard. You just have to pace yourself through traffic and catch them where you can slide them or get under them. Guys held their line really good tonight.

“It’s just a dream to drive this racecar, and I’m so thankful. Scott Smith and Scott Hess, it’s a two-man show during the week, and they bust their butts and changed motors three times in the last three weeks. I just want to thank them and all of our other crew.”

After Jackson saw Edkin’s nose and the motor started hitting better, he was gone. He knifed through traffic with a nifty move past the trio of Jay Fannasy, Chase Gutshall, and Troy Rhome on Lap 34 to build a lead and carry it to the finish.

“I want to thank Dellinger’s for putting this race on tonight,” Jackson said. “Scott and Dad ... I know what goes into putting on this race, because we do my Dad’s race.

“I also want to thank BAPS. I think it gets forgotten that we have an awesome racetrack every week. Kolten and the crew do an awesome job. We have a top, we have a bottom, and that gets forgotten. They catch beef on Facebook, and I’m on Facebook but wish it wasn’t around. It ruins these dirt tracks, and they bash them and bash them, and I don’t see them doing dirt tracks every day. Let’s give them a little bit of a break.”

Edkin settled for a second-place finish, with point leader and four-time winner Russ Mitten completing the podium. Matt Ondek and 12th-place starter Luke Deatrick completed the top five.

In the Auto Core Recycling 602 Modified main event, Brandon Edgar won an early battle with Joseph Brown to speed away to victory.

Brown started on the pole and led the first three laps before Steve Davis drove by. One lap later, Brown returned the favor and led the next four circuits before Edgar, who started eighth, made the winning pass.

Tom Princiotta started ninth and followed Edgar and Brown to the finish. Davis fell to fourth in the final rundown, with Jimmy Avery completing the top five.

Bob Stough was victorious in the 15-Lap Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company main event.

Logan Carbaugh started on the pole and grabbed the early lead over Stough, who started second. Stough hounded the leader for the first four circuits before making his move to the front on Lap 5.

Stough held the spot from there to claim another win. Carbaugh, Travis McClelland, Seth Kearchner, and Travis Perry completed the top five.

In the Limited Stock main event, Travis Brown took the lead from A.J. Hoffner and polished off the 20-Lap victory. Hoffner and Jeff Foster followed.
