Chase Gutshall Wins 2nd Super Sportsman Feature in 2022 at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: A few weeks ago, Chase Gutshall was involved in a crash that put him behind and added to some of his recent struggles.

It took a while to get everything squared away, but Kirt Gutshall, Chase’s father, went to work and got the car in tip-top shape. The rest was up to the 21-year-old driver, and he delivered in the BAPS Super Sportsman main event Saturday night.

Gutshall was on point throughout the 25-Lap main event, storming from sixth to the lead to capture his second victory of the season on CH Recovery Feature’s Only Night at the speedway.

“I didn’t think we would be standing here, because we’ve been struggling for so long,” Gutshall said. “I can’t thank my Dad enough. A couple of weeks ago, we wrecked, had the car stripped Sunday, and sent it to Sledgecraft Monday. My Dad took the motor over to Gary Hammaker and got another oil pan put in and fitted for this power steering.

“He just busted his butt. We own a family business, and he’s in there from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then in the shop until 4 a.m. That man has more dedication than anybody in the stands, pit area ... I love him more than anything.”

Steve Fannasy lined up on the pole, but it was Mike Enders taking the lead through the first and second corner. As for Gutshall, he methodically made his way to the front in an event that went non-stop for the first 20 laps.

Gutshall’s biggest move came on the 16th circuit. He powered through the corner to dispose of Troy Rhome and Fannasy to advance from fourth to second.

From there, the race belonged to the Middletown, Pa., ace. Gutshall caught and passed Enders for the lead on Lap 20 before the caution was displayed one lap later.

“My crew gave me a hell of a car,” Gutshall said. “I could slide the cars on the bottom, and I could run the top. I was stuck behind Troy and one of the Callahan cars, and they were battling pretty hard, and if you get off that cushion, they eat you up.

“If you were on it or above it, you were pushing like a dump truck. Enders was caught up with a lapped car, and I saw he got tight in three and four. I saw him cut down going to the bottom, so I thought that was my opportunity. I wailed it in there wide open, and it stuck, and I got under him. Thankfully, I got the lead before the caution came out, and here we are.”

Gutshall survived three restarts and sped away to the victory by just over 1.3 seconds. Kenny Edkin, who started 10th, came up to second, with Rhome, Tony Jackson, and Fannasy completing the top five.

“As a driver, under the caution, you think, ‘Hey, will I get a better restart on the top or the bottom,’” Gutshall said. “I was just looking at the middle of the track, and at the bottom coming out of four, there was a lot of moisture. I thought if I get my left rear in there, it will drive coming off.

“I didn’t hear anybody close behind me. I took off pretty good on the restart and stayed out there pretty good. It was pretty fun. We had a hell of a track, and I have to thank Kolten, Scott, and all of those guys. Everybody puts effort in here, and it, definitely, shows.”

In the Creekside Auto Sales Late Model main event, Travis Mease chased down Matt Murphy to claim the victory in the 20-Lap affair.

Murphy, who started third, charged into the lead on the opening lap. Mease started eighth on the grid and took his time getting to the front.

A caution on Lap 16 tightened up the field. One lap later, Mease shot past Murphy and punched his ticket to Victory Lane. Randy Stoudt, D.J. Mease, and Wayne Pfeil completed the top five.

The Gene Latta Ford Central PA Legends presented by Baker Door Company division was also on the card. It was another entertaining main event, with Chris Transeau scoring the win in the 15-Lap sprint.

Scott Musselman led the first four circuits before Transeau, who started sixth, took over. Travis McClelland started 11th on the grid and marched toward the front to challenge for the win.

But Transeau had the field covered and held McClelland off for the win. Bill Diehl, Musselman, and Mike Racine completed the top five.

Sam Rial made a last-lap pass on Patrick McClane to earn the victory in the 20-Lap Super Homes Street Stock feature event.

Bob Scott led the first 10 circuits before ninth-place starter Patrick McClane made a pass for the lead. Rial, who started 10th, tracked down McClane and made the winning pass on the white flag lap for the win.
