Coleby Frye Nabs Carl Billet Memorial Late Model Win at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Coleby Frye stood on the frontstretch reminiscing about being a kid and having the late Carl Billet drive for his father.

It was roughly 30 years ago when Frye was standing on the trailer at Silver Spring Speedway. Billet was practicing with a new transmission, and he hit the clutch instead of the brake, hit the back of the trailer, and knocked Frye clear off the top into the tire rack.

As Frye put it, “Good times.”

Frye had more than a good time on Saturday night. He was the dominant car throughout the Rock-It Pizza Carl Billet Memorial presented by Culley’s Supply and Tackle and was rewarded with a $2,500 payday in the 30-Lap main event.

“Anybody who races or raced for the last 40 years knew Carl,” Frye said. “He did a lot for people and drove for my Dad when I was a kid.

“I looked up to him as a driver, and he even helped me out when I was growing up. He was just a good guy and a good racer, and he was dedicated and one of the people who built this sport around here.”

Frye set quick time for the 40-Car Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model field with a lap of 19.751, earning $250. After making it through his heat race, he finished fifth in the Dash and took his time getting to the front in the A-Main.

Joey Hoffer, Chuck Schutz, and Niklas Stoudt fell victim to Frye in the first half of the race. D.J. Myers was running Frye’s car and grabbed the lead from his pole starting spot, only to give it up on the 14th circuit to the Dover, Pa., ace.

“The other car there, I owned, so I was like, ‘Well, we will just get going there,’” Frye said. “Then, he was holding me up a little bit, so we had to go.

“It was a good run for D.J., and I think it was a pretty good race. We had a little trouble getting going in the beginning with some cautions, but it cleared out, and we got to race a little. I don’t know how much passing there was behind us, but we passed a couple of people.”

Myers stayed close for a few laps, but Frye was too good over the second half of the race. The leader stayed glued to the bottom of the speedway and pulled away over the last 10 laps to earn a nice payday.

As for Myers, he settled for second. Stoudt, Travis Mease, and Shawn Shoemaker completed the top five. Jared Miller charged from 14th to seventh to win Hard Charger honors. Kyle Moser won the Non-Qualifier’s Race.

“We sold this car to Cameron a couple of months ago, and he got racing a little bit,” Frye said. “They have been struggling, so we worked on it practicing the other night and got to the shop and changed a couple of other things.

“It seems pretty good, now. He said he wants me to drive it again, but I think he needs to drive it now, and hopefully, it’s better.”

In the BAPS Super Sportsman main event, Tony Jackson took advantage of a late restart to charge from fourth to first and take the victory in the 25-Lap affair.

Matt Ondek took the lead from Eric Walker on Lap 7 and was setting a pretty good pace. He was leading by 1.7 seconds when Nate Young did a 360 in the fourth corner to bring out the lone caution with 22 laps scored.

Jackson got a great jump and got past Kenny Edkin and second-place Mike Enders. The Carlisle, Pa., ace slid Ondek through the first and second corner and had the lead down the backstretch on Lap 23.

The rest of the race belonged to Jackson, and he earned his third win at the speedway. Edkin, Enders, Ondek, and Russ Mitten completed the top five for the 24-Car field.

A wild last lap highlighted the 20-Lap Street Stock main event. When the dust settled on the final circuit, Kody Sites was declared the winner.

Brian Walls took the lead from early leader Jasen Geesaman on Lap 17. Coming to the checker, Geesaman made contact with the rear of Wagaman’s car on the frontstretch, which caused the leader to spin. Stan Wanner had nowhere to go and crashed into the stalled machine.

Geesaman crossed the line first but was disqualified. Sites, who was running third, ended up in Victory Lane. Ryan Smith, Jim Palm, Ryan Bloom, and Aaron Beard completed the top five.

Patrick McClane took the lead from Brian Walls on the ninth circuit and held off Sam Rial to score the win in the 20-Lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature.
