Henn, McClane & Brown Collect Sunoco/Insinger Nationals Victories at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Jordan Henn knew exactly what he was facing when he lined up for the 50-Lap main event at BAPS Motor Speedway on Saturday.

It wasn’t just starting seventh on a talented grid. This race was going to be a thinking man’s race on a tricky surface. Simply mashing the throttle down to the flow wasn’t going to lead to a spot in Victory Lane.

That recognition was the first hurdle to get over. Henn kept that mentality the rest of the event and got to the front in a hurry before polishing off the FXG Sign and Label 602 Modified win, which highlighted the two-day 19th annual Insinger/Sunoco Nationals fueled by Miller’s Racing Parts.

“I don’t even know what to say,” Henn said. “I knew this race was going to be about strategy ... stay smooth, save tires, and it was challenging because everybody was fighting for the bottom on restarts.

“You couldn’t really give an inch, and Skylar [Sheriff] kept trying to pinch me down there to get to the bottom, but it was good, clean, hard racing, and we came out on top.”

Jesse Leiby started on the pole and beat Mike Schneck through the first two corners to grab the early lead. Things got dicey at the front of the field, with Schneck making his car stick and slipping past the leader for the top spot on Lap 2.

Schneck continued to set the pace through the early stages of the event. Meanwhile, Henn, methodically, surged into the top five on the initial start and took over the second position on the 11th circuit.

It didn’t take long for Henn to chase down the leader. He shot past Schneck on Lap 15 and opened up a 3.5-second lead at various times over the race distance.

“It was just taking your time and not pushing it,” Henn said. “Starting seventh was a bummer, but it was staying consistent, running the bottom, and not making mistakes.

“The grip was on the bottom. Starting on the top was tough, and I was surprised that we were able to get the lead up there. You just have to keep the car straight on tracks like this and stay smooth. It worked out.”

Despite multiple restarts, Henn was never challenged. He drove away after the final caution on Lap 36 and claimed the win by 1.8 seconds. He earned $1,500 for the victory.

Sheriff, who started third, took over second on Lap 30. He kept Henn honest on the restart with 14 laps remaining before settling for second. Joseph Brown, Ray Woodall, and 16th-place starter Robert Dutton completed the top five.

The Superior Homes Extreme Stock division also competed in a 50-Lap affair, and it was dominated by Patrick McClane.

The battle into Turn 1 on the start decided the winner. McClane, who started on the outside pole, beat Chase Rehbein and survived nine restarts to claim the victory. Jason Townsend, Tyler Knaub, Donnie Broderick, and Brian Walls completed the top five.

In Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model competition, Wes Bonebrake was the class of the field, carving his way to the front to capture the 20-Lap main event.

Ross Leinbach led the opening circuit before Travis Mease wrestled the top spot away. Bonebrake, who started sixth, chased Mease down and sailed by on the 16th circuit and led the rest of the way.

Mease and Leinbach completed the podium. Dan Zechman charged from 10th to fourth, and D.J. Mease completed the top five.

The Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends were back in action, with Bob Stough taking top honors in the 15-Lap event. In doing so, he also clinched the traveling series championship for the division.

Mike Racine led the first three circuits from his pole-starting spot. Lincoln Kearchner took over on Lap 4, but his race came to an end due to contact with Richie Dobson Jr. while battling for the win on Lap 13.

Stough took over on the restart and drove away to the win over Seth Kearchner. Chris Transeau, who was victorious in Friday’s Legends feature at BAPS Motor Speedway, Travis McClelland, and Stephen Wurtzer completed the top five.

Brian Walls swept the weekend by winning a pair of Street Stock main events. On Friday, he led all 20 laps to claim the win, but his march was a little more difficult on Saturday.

Stan Wanner led the first eight laps in the Saturday main, with Walls leading Lap 9. Wanner speeded out front on Lap 10, but Walls was too much on the 11th circuit and led the rest of the way to take the win.

Other winners over the two-day affair were Travis Brown in the Limited Stock feature, Jesse Lloyd in the Scramble Car main, and Steven Cantwell Jr. in Classic Car competition. Eric McClane took top honors in the Legends Non-Qualifer event.
