Veteran Russ Mitten Wins Battle Over Young Guns
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Russ Mitten is one of the top Super Sportsman drivers in the division’s history. The numbers stack up in his favor.
The days of running full time are in the past. Mitten has taken a step back to focus on his business and things outside of racing, but when he does return to the track to compete, he continues to pjavascript:initEditNewsTour()ad his stats.
That was the case Saturday night. Mitten won a hard-fought affair, holding off a charging Kenny Edkin to capture the 25-Lap GA Smith Towing Super Sportsman main event on Tip-Top Roofing Solutions Night.
“As long as I can be competitive, I’m going to keep doing the part time thing,” Mitten said. “I want to come here and beat these guys.
“We didn’t change anything with this car. We winterized everything and didn’t change anything. We just came down and raced with what we had from last year, and we were fast out of the box.”
Mitten started fourth on the grid and wasted no time getting to the front. He surged past the front row of Jamie Rickert and Barry Thomas Jr. to grab the top spot away by the completion of Lap 1.
The caution was displayed on Lap 2, which closed up the field. Kenny Edkin, who started sixth, advanced to second on the restart and started chasing Mitten around the York Haven facility.
Edkin ran in Mitten’s shadow over the next 19 circuits before Tony Jackson hit the frontstretch on the frontstretch on the 22nd circuit. The battle heated up on the restart but was halted two laps later when Troy Hockenberry flipped.
A one-lap battle to the finish saw Mitten hold Edkin off by a mere .416 seconds. John Edkin, Brock Hammaker, and Scott Dellinger completed the top five.
In the Adams and Son HVAC Limited Late Models main event, Mike Walls jumped out front and led the entire 20-Lap distance to claim the win.
There were two cautions over the race distance. Walls was unchallenged and topped Scott Palmer by 1.907 seconds at the finish. Jared Miller, Sammy Rial, and Wayne Pfeil complete the top five.
Tyler Miller took top honors in the 20-Lap Street Stock main event. Patrick McClane, Doug Hoffman, Blake Decker, and Justin Palm completed the top five. Connor Cantwell was victorious in the Classic Car feature.
