John Edkin Gets first win of the season!
YORK HAVEN, Pa: John Edkin had to make a quick decision and stick with it to capture Saturday’s Super Sportsman main event at BAPS Motor Speedway.
First, he had to outduel Troy Hockenberry to get the lead. Then, he had to take it back and hold it over the last seven laps of the race distance.
The outcome showed how far Edkin has come as a driver. He got to the bottom of the speedway at just the right time and was good enough at the end to earn the victory in the 25-Lap affair on Levan Machine and Truck Equipment Hall of Fame Night at the speedway.
“We had a great battle with Matt [Ondek], and when I saw his nose on the bottom of three and four, and he got beside me, I knew I needed to move down,” said Edkin, of Marysville, Pa.
“We were able to beat him into the corner the next lap, and I stayed down on the low side. I was glad to see the checkered flag, and here we are.”
Edkin started sixth on the grid and quickly made his way to the front. Hockenberry, who started second, held the early lead, only to get passed by Edkin on the fifth circuit and stayed there through the middle stages of the event.
Matt Ondek took a more methodical approach in getting to the front. He started seventh and caught Edkin by Lap 15. The next time around, he blew by the leader and set the pace for two circuits.
But Edkin wasn’t done. He stayed close to Ondek and made the winning pass on Lap 18, leading the rest of the way for the win. Ondek held on for second, with 12th-place starter Scott Dellinger completing the podium.
Jay Fannasy started 11th and finished fourth. Mike Enders, who started 10th, completed the top five in the entertaining A-Main.
The intense racing continued in the 358 Late Model main event. Lane Snook made an amazing charge through the field, storming from his 27th-place starting spot to take the win in the 20-Lap affair.
Jed Latshaw lined up on the pole and led the first five laps. Fellow front-row starter Scott Palmer caught Latshaw on the sixth circuit and sprinted into the lead, holding it through Lap 15.
It was all Snook from there. He drove by Palmer on Lap 16 and led the final four laps to take the impressive win. Palmer, Tommy Slanker, Latshaw, and Travis Mease completed the top five.
Todd Walls claimed the PA Micro Midget main event, surging forward from his ninth-place starting spot. It only took four laps for Walls to get to the front, and he led the rest of the way in the 20-Lap main.
Josh Forry was second, followed by Ryan Rost, 13th-place starter Justin Cake, and 14th-place starter Andrew Ketterman.
The Super Homes Extreme Stock feature went to Alex Updegraff. He started 10th and took the lead on Lap 15 to score the victory.
Tyler Miller lined up on the outside pole and led the first two laps. Ty Huntsberger took over on Lap 3 and led until Updegraff shot into the lead five laps six laps from the finish. Huntsberger and Doug Hoffman finished second and third.
