Bill Laughman Collects $1,088 at Dennis Brill Memorial

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Bill Laughman had a little more incentive to reach Victory Lane Saturday night at racy BAPS Motor Speedway.

First and foremost, Laughman used to park next to the late Dennis Brill, and the Mason Dixon 270 Micro Series was honoring the driver. It also didn’t hurt that it’s the lone visit to the York Haven, Pa., facility in 2022.

With that much motivation and a fast car under him, Laughman showed the way. Despite being put back for jumping early in the main event, he surged to the front and dominated the 20-Lap feature to earn a $1,088 Payday.

“Just to be able to race at BAPS is really neat,” Laughman said. “I know the Grobrecht family from way back in the day with Scott, Brian, and all of them growing up in the same area and being pretty close to the same age.

“It was really great that they had us and to win there. This race is one I really wanted to win. Dennis was a super-nice guy. He didn’t have the best of everything, but he was just happy and excited to be there and be racing. The track was really nice, and we only get to race here once a year. So, at least we get bragging rights for a year.”

Laughman lined up second on the grid, but the race was delayed on the first lap when Brian Marriott flipped on the frontstretch. The second start was no better for Laughman, who was hit for jumping and put back a row.

Lining up in the second row didn’t help Laughman’s cause and let Brent Bull get the lead over the field. Laughman got up on the wheel and quickly made his way to the front, wrestling the lead away on the fourth circuit.

“I couldn’t hear much on the transponder, but they said they were yelling [about the start], so I guess I just didn’t hear,” Laughman said. “They had a chalk line down in four. In all my years of racing, you start on the chalk line, and I guess I jumped twice and wasn’t hearing what they were saying so they put me back a row.

“I guess they had two orange cones on the track, and I guess that is where we were supposed to go. I didn’t know that, but it just made me hungrier to get the lead.”

Once out front, Laughman wasn’t challenged. He had leads of over two seconds wiped out and had no problem surviving four restarts to take the victory over Bull.

Cory Myers stormed from ninth to finish third. Matt Fernsler and Kyle Hendershot completed the top five in the main event. Mike Rutherford, Myers, and Adrian Shaffer were heat winners for the 31-car field. Jeff Haefke won the consolation.

“They said we pretty much checked out,” Laughman said. “We were pretty quick all night. Swope’s Salvage gave some money away for fast time, and we snagged that. In the heat race, we started eighth and got to third and got to the redraw. The rest was history.”

In the entertaining Gene Latta Ford Central Pa. Legends main event, Travis McClelland ended Jorjie Sweger’s BAPS dominance over the division and earned the victory in the 15-Lap feature event.

Sweger, who won the last five Legends races at the track, started second and led the first 13 circuits. She was involved in an incident with Seth Kearchner and Steve Seibert Jr. in Turn 1 and lost any chance at adding another win to her resumé.

McClelland started ninth and took over. He led the rest of the way and claimed the victory by .555 seconds over Robert Stough. Lincoln Kearchner, Logan Carbaugh, and Shaun Abney completed the top five.

The Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature saw Sam Rial win a fierce early-race battle with Brian Rehbein, which led to the 20-Lap win.

Doug Hoffman led the first circuit, with Ty Huntsberger taking over the lead on Lap 2. Rehbein took his turn at the top of the leaderboard on Lap 7, but Rial was too much on Lap 13 and led the rest of the way.

A.J. Hoffner led 11 of 15 laps to claim the Limited Stock main event. He beat Matt Worley and Brandon Hoffner to the finish. Roy Denike started on the pole and won the Scramble Car feature, with Steve Cantwell Jr. claiming the Classic Car A-Main.
