Steve Davis Goes Three-for-Three in 602 Modified 6-Pack Series at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, PA - Steve Davis prefers to remain traditional when it comes to his 602 Modified and finding the right combination for different tracks.

Obviously, that approach works at BAPS Motor Speedway. At least it looked that way Saturday night in the Six-Pack Series event.

It didn’t matter that Davis started 11th on the grid. He sliced his way through the field and took the lead with three laps remaining to earn the victory in the 25-Lap FXG Sign and Label/Dickey’s Barbecue Pit 602 Modified feature.

“I like this place,” Davis said after his charge. “I like this clay. We don’t get to play on this stuff much. I wish we could race here weekly. This place is beautiful. They do a phenomenal job, and this is one of my favorite places in the country, and I’ve been to about 50.

“A lot of guys are going to coils and stuff like that for suspension. I’ve stuck with bars. It seems to, even when it gets choppy, it stays kind of balanced.”

Joe Cianbrone started on the pole and took the lead when the race went green. He was followed by sixth-place starter Ricky Wegner Jr., who showed plenty of speed on the opening circuit.

Davis’ assault started immediately. He took over sixth on Lap 3 and cracked the top five by the completion of Lap 6.

A pair of caution flags on Lap 7 and Lap 10 helped Davis’ pursuit. He took over fourth on Lap 8 and the third position by the completion of Lap 10.

“We were racing in New York last night,” Davis said. “I wouldn’t be racing without these guys. We hurt the motor in that 72-Car last Saturday. I called Howie Finch, he yanked his other car’s motor right out of it on Wednesday, and we switched motors so we could run in New York last night.

“Yeah, it’s character,” Davis said of the track conditions. “Track character. You’ve got to learn to get around them and just try to stay as balanced as possible.”

Skylar Sheriff, who started third, took the lead from Cianbrone on Lap 11. He led through Lap 22 until Davis slipped by one lap later.

Sheriff’s chance of returning the favor ended on the same lap, when he collided with a lapped car in Turn 3. Third-place running Mike Schane couldn’t avoid the incident and was also involved.

“It wasn’t easy,” Davis said. “Those guys ... I don’t know what happened with Skylar and Mike, but it was looking tough. Then, the yellow came out, and I didn’t know what it was for, and I had just gotten by him.”

Davis led the last three laps to take the victory. He also landed $100 for being the event’s hard charger, which was courtesy of Skylar Sheriff.

Fourth-place starter Brandon Edgar, Rick Wegner Jr., Cianbrone, and Bobby Dmuchowski completed the top five.

In the BAPS Super Sportsman A-Main, Chris Meleason started on the pole and led the entire 25-Lap race distance to earn the win.

The lone caution of the race occurred on the opening lap, when Rich Eichelberger spun in Turn 3. Meleason was money on the complete restart and surged ahead of the field.

Meleason wasn’t challenged and took the win by a little over five seconds. Scott Dellinger came from 10th to second, passing Jay Fannasy on the last lap to get the runner-up position. Timmy Barrick and Frankie Herr completed the top five.

“I didn’t know how close they were,” Meleason said. “We’ve had a really tough season this year. We started off blowing motors. We did three right away, and then my partner Chuck that we raced with, he passed away this year.

“So, we kind of took some time off to regroup. This is only the second race on this car, so I’d say these guys did a pretty good job getting it hooked up.”

Michael Altobelli started on the pole and wired the field to earn the win in the 25-Lap Mid-Atlantic Modified main event.

There were four caution periods over the race distance, but that didn’t slow Altobelli down. He took the win over Steve Axtell Jr. by 2.883 seconds at the stripe. Ray Kable, Justin Cullum, and Jerry Foster completed the top five.

In the Limited Stock feature, Ricky Weaver Jr. marched from his 13th-place starting spot on the grid to claim the win in the 15-Lap affair.

Weaver took the lead from John Shorb Jr. on Lap 9 and cruised to the 2.061-second win. Wesley Miller, Adam Campbell, Shorb, and Justin Wagaman completed the top five.
