Coleby Frye Dominates Carl Billet Memorial at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: When BAPS Motor Speedway has a big race for the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model division, Coleby Frye is the driver to beat.

It probably seems a little odd, because Frye isn’t a regular at the speedway. If there are subtle changes to the track with the surface, prep, or anything out, Frye doesn’t have the luxury of being able to adjust over time.

Frye does it on the fly.

And he does it with little effort. It was the case ... again ... Saturday night. This time, Frye came out on top in a tight battle with Shawn Shoemaker and scored the victory in the 30-Lap Carl Billet Memorial presented by Rock-It Pizza & Subs worth $1,750 to the winner.

Things got off to a rough start for Frye in the main event. He was hit for a false start when the race went green, and he was put back a row and lined up third.

Matt Adams took advantage and led the first circuit. Shoemaker, who started second, wasted little time getting to the front and paced the field on Lap 2.

As for Frye, he settled into third at the start. By the time the third lap was complete, the Dover, Pa., driver took second and started to track down the leader.

Shoemaker survived a pair of cautions before the halfway point. As the laps were winding down, Frye made his move, and the top two diced through traffic, much to the delight of the fans in attendance.

“It was a good race, there,” Frye said. “I guess the leader doesn’t start the race when he wants. You learn something new every day, but it made for a better race. Who knows? Maybe he passes us in lapped traffic.

“We were there waiting for an opportunity most of the race, and he kind of started moving around a little bit like he didn’t know what he wanted to do. So, I figured I would pressure him some, and we got it done.”

Travis Mease brought out the final caution on the 24th circuit, which set up a seven-lap dash to the finish. Frye slipped by on Lap 2 and started to pull away, taking the checker and the victory by 1.5 seconds.

Shoemaker, who set quick time on the night with a lap of 18.554, settled for second, with 10th-place starter Devin Frey rounding out the podium. Adams and Chad Smith completed the top five.

“I kind of wanted to get ahead of him on the start, and I guess I went a little early,” Frye said. “He was right there in the middle groove and ran a good race. I thought I was going to get him in lapped traffic, but that got hairy at times.

“It all worked out. It was good racing. The track has been pretty decent, and it’s better racing when you can move around.”

Jed Latshaw, Frye, Steve Todorow, and Adams were heat winners for the 35-car field. Frye won the Dash. Jared Miller won the 20-Lap Non-Qualifiers Race.

Danny Beard wired the field in the Miller’s Racing Parts Street Stock main event, but it was far from easy over the 20-Lap distance.

Jim Palm started fifth and made his way to second after a Lap 18 restart. He stayed close to the leader, but Beard had enough at the finish to claim the victory by .466 seconds.

Chris Derr started 13th and charged to third. Russ Shoop and Jim Jacobs completed the top five after starting seventh and eighth, respectively. Kyle Martin and Kody Sites were heat winners in Street Stock competition.

In Superior Homes Extreme Stock competition, Sam Rial dominated the second half of the 20-Lap affair and sped away to another victory.

Doug Hoffman started on the pole and rocketed out front. He led the first lap before Patrick McClane wrestled the lead away and held it until Rial, who started eighth, surged ahead on the fifth circuit.

Rial claimed the win by 3.450 seconds. McClane, Hunter Fulton, Bob Scott Jr., and Hoffman completed the top five. Fulton and Jason Townsend were heat winners for the 16-car field.
