Matt Ondek Claims Meyer's RV Super Sportsman Victory at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Matt Ondek has more speed than what his overall statistics indicate in Super Sportsman competition at BAPS Motor Speedway.

The line reads a little pedestrian. Ondek entered last weekend with one win in 11 main events with two top-five finishes, and eight top 10s, but if you ask his fellow drivers and teams, the Carlisle, Pa., driver is a handful in main events.

That was the case, again, on Saturday night. The difference this time was that Ondek got to the front and drove away from the field to capture the 25-Lap Meyer’s RV Super Sportsman main event on Chad Baker Drain Cleaning, Plumbing, and HVAC Ladies Night at the speedway.

“It feels good to get back in Victory Lane,” Ondek said. “We’ve hit on a pretty good set up here, as of late. The car has been balanced, and we are getting it done.

“We’ve been pretty consistent. The crew has been jelling, and everybody is getting along, and we’re starting to figure some things out.”

Ondek wasted little time getting to the front. After starting fourth on the grid, he shot into the second spot by the end of the first lap and chased down the leader by the time the third circuit was scored.

Eric Rutz, who beat Blake Brooks on the initial start, had no chance. A pile-up in Turn 1 on Lap 3 forced a restart, one that Ondek used to blast into the lead and distance himself from the field.

“We knew we needed to get to the front in a hurry, because everybody is really fast down there,” Ondek said. “I just hit the top side of the track, and then on a restart, I saw Mike Enders on the bottom of the track. He’s usually pretty good down there, so I figured I would try the bottom.

“It worked really good for us. We got to lapped traffic, and I was able to move high or low. The car was really balanced.”

Once out front, Ondek made short work of the field. The 48-year-old driver left his fellow competitors sit and claimed the win by a hefty 5.992 seconds.

Mike Enders finished a distant second. Jay Fannasy, Scott Dellinger, and 10th-place starter Kenny Edkin completed the top five.

In the Creekside Auto Sales 358 Late Model main event, Sean Merkel claimed the win, but he was disqualified for refusing tech. Second-place Jakob Piper also refused post-race inspection, which handed the win to Travis Mease.

Mease started on the pole and led the first five laps. Merkel, who lined up fifth, charged to the top spot by the time Lap 6 was scored. He drove away to an apparent 2.355-second win, but he was stripped of the win a short time after.

Piper also got by Mease, but he was also disqualified. Mease passed post-race tech and was awarded the win. Zach Kauffman, Chaz Buchinsky, Chuck Cox III, and Lane Snook completed the top five.

Brian Walls started fifth and charged to the front to punch his ticket to Victory Lane in the 20-Lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock feature.

Bob Scott started on the outside pole and drove into the lead. Walls was the class of the field and showed it early, blasting by the leader on the second circuit.

Despite multiple cautions, Walls cruised to the 1.667-second win. Scott, Hunter Fulton, Alex Updegraff, and Will Long completed the top five.

Tyler Miller led the final two circuits to win the 20-Lap Classic Car main event. Logan Miller and Dylan Brown completed the podium.
