MACRI WINS MIDWEEK 410 SPRINT CAR SHOW

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: There is no doubt that Anthony Macri has come a long way in his Sprint Car career, both on the track and off.

Behind the wheel, he’s learned patience and race craft. He is able to think his way through a race, put his car in the right spots, and wait for just the right time to pull the trigger on a winning pass.

This maturation has also been evident at BAPS Motor Speedway, a track he has struggled at in the past. Give him a good car, and he knows how to get it to the front at the York Haven, Pa., facility.

That’s exactly what Macri did on Wednesday night during Hoseheads.com Night presented by Denk Electric. The Dillsburg, Pa., driver made a daring pass in the closing stages of the 30-Lap feature to win a spirited and thrilling battle with Danny Dietirch.

“I think a couple of years ago, I would’ve been in the catch fence,” said Macri after his 11th win of the season and sixth at the speedway. “My patience has come a long way, and I’m trying to race smarter. I just tried to trick Danny into going somewhere his car wasn’t happy, and it played out.”

Dietrich, a three-time winner at BAPS this season, started on the outside of the front row and got the jump on pole-sitter Chase Dietz when the green flag dropped. Meanwhile, Macri settled into fourth.

Macri slipped past Brock Zearfoss for the third position on the third circuit. Up front, Dietrich started to reel in lapped traffic while fending off Dietz around the quick BAPS Motor Speedway surface.

Dietz made a couple of bids for the lead, showing his nose entering Turn 1. Dietrich was up to task, surging ahead on the exit of Turn 2. Macri entered the picture on Lap 10 and started to challenge Dietz for the runner-up spot.

It took a while, but Macri made the pass coming off Turn 4 on Lap 17. Within two laps, he was all over Dietrich, looking for a way to get by.

Dietrich labored a bit over the last 10 laps. He was searching for a line where his car would perform, which allowed Macri to challenge and set up the winning pass.

The move came on the 28th circuit. Macri got a huge run off of Turn 2 and pulled a slide job entering the third corner. The slider cleared, but there was some slight contact between nerf bars in Turn 4, but it didn’t upset either car.

“That was a little bit of a dogfight there, for sure,” Macri said. “I was just trying to trick Danny into doing something different than what he was doing and trying to find a spot on the track where my car was happy.

“The track got dirty, and it was easy to spin the tires and hard to get a run. I got a good run off two, and I knew that would be my only shot to slide him. There might have been a bump; I don’t know how close it was. If I did hit him, it wasn’t intentional. The guys worked hard and gave me a good car, and it worked out.”

Macri, who beat the World of Outlaws at BAPS in July, led the final two circuits and claimed the win by 1.195 seconds at the stripe. Dietrich settled for second, with Dietz, Zearfoss, and Tyler Ross completing the top five.

It was a perfect night for Macri. He set quick time with a lap of 14.693, and he won his heat race. Dietz was also a heat-race winner.
