Anthony Macri Goes 2-for-2 with BAPS Speedweek Victory

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Anthony Macri is putting up some impressive numbers ... and the difficulty of the competition doesn’t seem to matter.

Coming into Sunday’s Pennsylvania Speedweek at BAPS Motor Speedway, Macri had four wins, 18 top-five finishes, and 19 top 10s in his last 21 starts. He’s beaten the World of Outlaws, All Star Circuit of Champions, and the hometown crew.

Those numbers grew to new heights during the 30-Lap event, which was presented by Engler Machine and Tool. Macri took the lead on the seventh circuit and was never challenged the rest of the way in scoring his second-straight Speedweek triumph to start the series.

“This thing is rolling, right now, and everywhere we seem to go, we time trial well,” Macri said. “Tonight, we were fortunate enough to go out early and get a good lap. Then we locked in through the heat race, and the thing was ripping.

“Joe, Hank, Lucky, Chucky, and Doug are working pretty hard, and I do okay, at times. I mess up, at times, but we’ve been able to put together good features. It’s a pleasure to drive this car, right now.”

Lucas Wolfe lined up on the pole and jumped out front. Macri started on the outside of the front row and settled into second, with Tanner Thorson and Danny Dietrich following close behind on Lap 1.

Dietrich made a move on Thorson to take third on Lap 3. Meanwhile up front, Macri was within .498 seconds of Wolfe and closing fast.

Macri’s winning move came on the seventh circuit. Wolfe was on the cushion through the second corner, and the Dillsburg, Pa., ace shot under the leader to drive out front and stretch his advantage by the flagstand.

Lapped traffic came into play on Lap 11. It didn’t slow Macri’s pace, and he led by 1.731 seconds and had a two-second cushion by the time the 12th circuit was scored.

“A good car makes me feel like I can be a little more ballsy in lapped traffic,” Macri said after his seventh win of the season. “There were a couple of moves I wouldn’t normally make, but I knew to keep those guys behind me, I had to make moves I normally don’t make.

“I had a really good car, and it made lapped traffic a little easier. This thing could go wherever I wanted — top, bottom, the slider line — it was a good car.”

That was evident.

Thorson slipped past Dietrich on Lap 13 and rocketed by Wolfe two laps later. He started to gain on the leader, but his pace was slowed on Lap 17 when fifth-place Brent Marks got upside down in the third corner. Devon Borden was also involved.

When the race went back to green, it was all Macri. He led by 2.561 seconds on Lap 22 before hitting lapped traffic for a second time one lap later.

Justin Peck made a late charge, passing Dietrich and Thorson. He was able to close the gap to .871 seconds, but it was all Macri at the finish. Peck, Thorson, Dietrich, and Lance Dewease completed the top five.

Thorson set quick time for the 34-car field with a lap of 14.736. Dewease, Macri, Dietrich, and Wolfe were heat winners, with Austin Bishop winning the B-Main.

In the Meyer’s RV Super Sportsman main event, Kenny Edkin charged from 11th to capture his second win of the season at the speedway. He is the only driver to have more than one victory this season in the division.

Steve Wilbur led the first circuit before fourth-place starter Tyler Wolford took over at the front on Lap 2. He led the next 11 laps before Edkin drove by and cruised to the win by 3.326 seconds at the finish.

Jay Fannasy placed second in the final rundown, with John Edkin, Tony Jackson, and Wolford completing the top five. Scott Dellinger, Wolford, and Fannasy were heat winners for the 21-car field.
